The Chinese city of Chang’an marked one end of the Silk Road.
This bustling ancient city was the country’s capital during the Han dynasty, and was a political and cultural centrepoint. Merchants and caravans would set off for the West, laden with luxuries like silks, spices, porcelain and teas.
Today, we know Chang’an as Xi’an – and it’s one of China’s most popular cities. We stop by for two nights on all of our tours of China. It gives us the chance to see the sights (like the soaring Big Wild Goose Pagoda and lantern-lit City Walls), sip tea in traditional teahouses and sample a little local cuisine (the paper-thin, melt-in-the-mouth dumplings are delicious). Of course, we also include a visit to the area’s most famous sight: the Terracotta Warriors, an immense army of sculptures and statues created to guard an ancient emperor.
